The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is one of the most popular short treks in the Annapurna region, known for its stunning views, cultural experiences, and accessible trails. The trek’s most famous highlights are the sunset and sunrises view from Mohare Danda (3,300 m) and Poon Hill (3,210 m), which offer panoramic views of the Himalayan giants, including Annapurna I (8,091 meters), Dhaulagiri (8,167 meters), Manaslu (8,163 m) and Machapuchare (Fishtail - 6,993 m), and several other peaks. The trek passes through traditional Gurung and Magar villages, such as Ghorepani and Ghandruk, offering trekkers the chance to experience the local lifestyle, customs, and hospitality. The trail takes you through dense rhododendron forests. In spring, these forests are in full bloom, adding vibrant color to the trek.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is easy and suitable for families and beginners. The highest point of the trek is Mohare Danda (3,300 m) and comfortable guesthouses are available on the full trail.

You may hike an estimated 5 hours and climb 500 m (1,600 ft) a day. You are in good health and we recommend that you maintain your fitness before departure by participating regularly in physical activities and walking.

Itinerary

  • Early travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu by private jeep or local bus that offers a great panorama of central Nepal region and Himalayas. Approx. 6 to 8 hours trip.

  • After a drive from Pokhara to Birethanti (1,030 m), the trek begins to Ulleri (1,960m), a Magar village. Approx. 4/5 hours hike, ascending 1,060 m and descending 40 m.

  • A climb through magnificent rhododendron forests brings you to the Mohare Danda viewpoint (3,310 m), from where you can admire magnificent sunsets and sunrises over Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. Approx. 5/6 hours hike, ascending 1,350 m.

  • This day begins along the ridge to the Poonhill viewpoint (3,210 m), from where you can admire the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Then, you climb down to Ghorepani (2,86O m) through a rhododendron forest..Approx. 4/5 hours hike, ascending 120 m and descending 550 m.

  • A day through forests of pines, oak trees, junipers and rhododendrons takes you to Tadapani (2,630 m), another viewpoint over Annapurna. Approx 5/6 hours hike, ascending 620 m and descending 820 m.

  • This day takes you to Ghandruk (1,940 m), through dense forests. In spring, the amazing rhododendron flowers add bright colors to the landscape, making the trek particularly beautiful. Ghandruk is a well-preserved traditional Gurung village, with a Gurung museum and a cultural center where you can learn about the local way of life and customs. Approx 3 hours hike, descending 680 m.

  • Return to Pokhara by local jeep, 2-3 hours trip and visit of Pokhara. (Phewa Lake, Peace Pagoda, Pumdikot, Gupteshwor Cave…)

  • Back to Kathmandu by private jeep or local bus. Approx. 6 to 8 hours trip (or morning flight).
