The Annapurna Base Camp trek (ABC) will bring you to the Sanctuary of the Annapurna, from where you can enjoy the majestic 360-degree panorama of the Annapurna South (7,219 m), Annapurna I (8,091 m), and Annapurna III (7,555 m), and also Machhapuchhare (better known as Fish Tail, 6,993 m), Hiunchuli Peak (6,441 m) amongst others. The trek begins through a narrow gateway located at the head of the Modi Khola and continues between two peaks, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhare. This deep gorge represents a natural division between the dense rain forest and bamboo jungle and the higher mountain regions. Anyone who loves nature and beautiful landscape will never forget this astounding view. 

Traditional villages, such as Ghandruk and Ulleri, will be visited. They belong to Gurung and Magar communities, Buddhist ethnic groups with their own language.This trek can be completed within 8 days and comfortable guesthouses are available on the full trail.

Possible option: this trek can also bring you to Ghorepani and Poonhill, in the south of Annapurna range, through hills and rhododendron forests. This region offers viewpoints towards several such as Annapurna range and Dhaulagiri range (8,167 m), especially from Poonhill viewpoint (3,210 m).

You may hike an estimated 6 hours and you should be able to climb 800 m (2,600 ft) a day. You may be able to cope with consecutive days’ walking. You are in good health and we recommend that you maintain your fitness before departure by participating regularly in physical activities and walking.

Itinerary

  • Early travel to Pokhara from Kathmandu by private jeep or local bus that offers a great panorama of central Nepal region and Himalayas. Approx. 6 to 8 hours trip.

  • After a drive from Pokhara to Birethanti (1,030 m), the trek begins to Ulleri (1,960m), a Magar village. Approx. 4/5 hours hike, ascending 1,060 m and descending 40 m.

  • A climb through magnificent rhododendron forests brings you to the Mohare Danda viewpoint (3,310 m), from where you can admire magnificent sunsets and sunrises over Dhaulagiri, Annapurna and Manaslu. Approx. 5/6 hours hike, ascending 1,250 m.

  • This day begins along the ridge to the Poonhill viewpoint (3,210 m), from where you can admire the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges. Then, you climb down to Ghorepani (2,86O m) through a rhododendron forest..Approx. 4/5 hours hike, ascending 120 m and descending 550 m.

  • A day through forests of pines, oak trees, junipers and rhododendrons takes you to Tadapani (2,630 m), another viewpoint over Annapurna. Approx 5/6 hours hike, ascending 620 m and descending 820 m.

  • This day takes you to Chhomrong (2,170 m)  through several Gurung villages and over 2 rivers on suspension bridges. You can enjoy the view over Annapurna South. Approx 5/6 hours hike, ascending 540 m and descending 1,220 m.

  • The path follows the course of the Modi Khola river, in a narrow gateway located between Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhare peaks. You will hike through bamboo and rhododendron forests till Dovan (2,540 m). Approx 5/6 hours hike, ascending 860 m and descending 370 m.

  • You leave the forests behind on this day's ascent into a more open and rocky valley. Several remarkable waterfalls can be observed. From Machhapuchhare Base Camp (3,700 m), you can admire a 360-degree view of Machhapuchhare and Annapurna South. Approx 5/6 hours hike, ascending 1,430 m and descending 250 m.

  • A final ascent takes you to the Annapurna Sanctuary (4,130 m). This majestic cirque is the highlight of this trek, where you can admire a breathtaking 360° panorama of the South Annapurna glacier, Annapurna I and III, Machhapuchhare, among others. You can also enjoy magnificent sunsets and sunrises over Annapurna I. Approx 3 hours hike, ascending 450 m.

  • This day's descent  through the same route, along the Modi Khola, allows you to visit the valley's Gurung villages once again. Approx 6/7 hours hike, ascending 300 m and descending 2,100 m.

  • Descend along the Modi Khola to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m), a small ridge-top village famous for its hot springs and the longest and highest suspension bridge in the valley. If you're in the mood for a relaxing dip, the hot springs are about 20 minutes downstream and will take care of your aching limbs. Approx 6/7 hours hike, ascending 950 m and descending 1,540 m.

  • Return to Pokhara by local jeep, 2-3 hours trip and visit of Pokhara. (Phewa Lake, Peace Pagoda, Pumdikot, Gupteshwor Cave…)

  • Back to Kathmandu by private jeep or local bus. Approx. 6 to 8 hours trip (or morning flight).
